My name is Alison Muir. I have been in private practice for over 30 years, having 'apprenticed' in various government and non-government positions previous to that. The Sunshine Coast has been my base for a many years now and will continue to be for some years to come no doubt!
In the course of my working life, I have had the opportunity to work with a broad range of people varying in age from eight through to 80 years of age, experiencing varying degrees of psychological pain. My workplace situations have ranged from child, adolescent and adult inpatient and outpatient facilities, child protection services, vocational rehabilitation services, management consulting programs and disability services, as well as private consulting practice.
Since graduating as a psychologist in the early '80s, I have found my clients to be patient teachers and myself an attentive student, mutually engaged in advancing the journey to wholeness. Whether the goal is to quit smoking, make a career change or deal with the consequences of abuse, courage is required.
Counselling and psychological therapy is a unique situation in which participants form a powerful alliance in order to break old patterns that could well be hindering them from achieving their goals and empowering their life choices. To be part of that alliance is to witness that tremendous courage and to be privy to a unique birthing process as individuals break free of the psychological chains that have bound them up and held them down.
I find it deeply humbling and yet deeply satisfying to work with people who are challenging themselves to grow despite conditions and circumstances that could well thwart them in their search for personal competency and authenticity.
Personal development work and relationship counselling have become two areas of particular specialisation over the past decade, resulting in the development of multiple insights and understandings that provide clients with potent ways and means to effect change in their lives.
The success of these strategies has lead to the development of workshop programs that are highly participative, educational and empowering.
